Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a medical treatment that involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized environment. It is used to accelerate healing, improve oxygen delivery to tissues, and treat various medical conditions. Originally developed to treat decompression sickness in divers, HBOT has since been recognized for its wide-ranging therapeutic applications.

Experience the Future of Healing with Our Unique Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber! Unlike traditional chambers that require you to lie down in a confined space, our innovative design allows you to sit comfortably while receiving the therapeutic benefits of hyperbaric oxygen therapy. We prioritize your comfort and well-being, making it an ideal choice for those who may feel claustrophobic. Enjoy the healing advantages of increased oxygen levels without discomfort because your comfort is our priority!

During HBOT, a patient enters a hyperbaric chamber- ( At Colts Neck Stem Cells it is a Seated Chamber)  where the air pressure is increased to 1.5 to 3 times higher than normal atmospheric pressure. Under these conditions, the lungs can absorb significantly more oxygen than they would at normal air pressure. This highly oxygenated blood helps repair damaged tissues, fight infections, and reduce inflammation.

Medical Uses of HBOT

HBOT is approved by the FDA and medical authorities for several conditions and is being researched for many others.

FDA-Approved Conditions for HBOT:

✔️ Decompression Sickness – Used in divers suffering from nitrogen gas bubbles in the bloodstream.
✔️ Carbon Monoxide Poisoning – Helps remove carbon monoxide from the blood.
✔️ Chronic Wounds & Diabetic Ulcers – Speeds up healing of non-healing wounds.
✔️ Radiation Injury (from Cancer Treatment) – Helps repair radiation-damaged tissue.
✔️ Severe Burns – Reduces inflammation and promotes tissue regeneration.
✔️ Infections (e.g., Gangrene, Osteomyelitis) – Helps kill bacteria and enhance immune response.
✔️ Severe Anemia – Temporarily increases oxygen levels when blood transfusion is not possible.

Potential Research-Based Uses (Not FDA-Approved Yet):

🔹 Neurological Conditions – Studies suggest potential benefits for stroke recovery, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and Alzheimer’s disease.
🔹 Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) – Some reports suggest improvements in cognitive function and inflammation reduction.
🔹 Athletic Recovery – Used by athletes to speed up muscle recovery and reduce fatigue.
🔹 Anti-Aging & Skin Health – Some studies explore HBOT for collagen production and cell regeneration.

Benefits of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Increases Oxygen Delivery: Enhances oxygen absorption in tissues, even in areas with poor blood flow.
Accelerates Healing: Stimulates new blood vessel growth (angiogenesis) and tissue repair.
Reduces Inflammation: Helps manage chronic inflammatory conditions.
Boosts Immune Function: Enhances the body’s ability to fight infections.
Supports Brain Health: May help with cognitive recovery after strokes or brain injuries.

What to Expect During an HBOT Session

  1. Preparation: Patients wear loose-fitting, cotton clothing and remove any flammable objects (e.g., watches, electronic devices).
  2. Entering the Chamber: You lie down inside a chamber, which is then sealed and pressurized.
  3. Breathing Oxygen: Patients breathe in 100% oxygen through a mask or directly in the chamber.
  4. Session Duration: Typically lasts 60–120 minutes, depending on the condition being treated.
  5. Post-Treatment: Patients may feel lightheaded but can usually return to normal activities soon after.

Possible Side Effects:

  • Ear Barotrauma: Mild ear discomfort due to pressure changes (similar to airplane travel).
  • Fatigue or Dizziness: Some people feel tired after treatment.
  • Temporary Vision Changes: Rare but possible slight nearsightedness after multiple sessions.
  • Oxygen Toxicity: Extremely rare, but excessive oxygen exposure can cause lung irritation or seizures.

Is HBOT Right for You?

While HBOT is generally safe, it should only be used under medical supervision. It may not be suitable for individuals with:
Untreated Pneumothorax (Collapsed Lung) – Increased pressure can worsen lung damage.
Respiratory Infections or Fever – Can affect breathing under pressure.
Claustrophobia – Monoplace chambers can feel confining for some patients.
Certain Medications – Some drugs (e.g., chemotherapy agents) may interact with oxygen therapy.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a powerful treatment with proven benefits for wound healing, oxygen delivery, and various medical conditions. While more research is needed for newer applications, it has already changed the landscape of modern medicine. If you’re considering HBOT, call (732)-867-7330or email
