However, athletes who wear braces need to take a few extra precautions to protect their teeth, gums, and orthodontic appliances while playing.

Why Do Athletes With Braces Need a Mouthguard?
Braces are designed to gradually move teeth into better alignment, but the brackets and wires can also create additional areas that may cause irritation if the mouth receives an impact.
Sports such as football, lacrosse, hockey, basketball, baseball, softball, and other activities can involve accidental contact with another player, a ball, a stick, or other equipment. Even sports that may not seem highly physical can involve falls or unexpected collisions.

Can You Wear a Regular Mouthguard With Braces?

What About After Braces Come Off?
The need for a mouthguard does not necessarily end when braces are removed.
Athletes should continue to consider mouth protection when participating in sports where there is a risk of an injury to the mouth or face. After orthodontic treatment, patients may also be wearing a retainer to help maintain their new smile.
