What Is Integrative Functional Psychiatry?

What Is Integrative Functional Psychiatry?

By Hema Vyas, M.D.

Mental health treatment is not always one-size-fits-all. While two people may experience similar symptoms, the reasons behind those symptoms can be very different. This is one reason some patients are interested in a more personalized approach to psychiatric care.

Dr. Hema Vyas, M.D., Psychiatrist, uses a holistic approach that looks at the whole person rather than focusing only on individual symptoms. Her approach may include traditional psychiatric care along with areas such as nutrition, lifestyle, mindfulness, meditation, sleep, gut health, and other factors that may influence a person’s mental and emotional well-being.

Looking Beyond Symptoms

Traditional psychiatric treatment often focuses on managing symptoms through therapy, medication, or a combination of both. Medications such as antidepressants, mood stabilizers, or stimulants can be an important part of treatment for many patients.

Integrative functional psychiatry does not necessarily replace these treatments. Instead, Dr. Vyas may also look at other factors that could be contributing to symptoms such as difficulty concentrating, low energy, poor sleep, changes in mood, anxiety, or problems with motivation. In addition, nutritional deficiencies, metabolic concerns, habits, stress, sleep patterns, and other underlying factors may sometimes affect how a person feels physically and emotionally.

How Does Integrative Functional Psychiatry Work?

Depending on the patient, integrative functional psychiatry may include targeted laboratory testing. These tests can sometimes help identify nutritional deficiencies, metabolic imbalances, or other factors that may be affecting overall health and brain function.

Not every patient will need the same testing, and some specialized tests may not be covered by insurance. Dr. Vyas discusses recommendations individually based on a patient’s symptoms, concerns, and goals.

If testing identifies an area that may need attention, the results can help guide a more personalized treatment plan. This could include changes involving nutrition, supplementation, gut health, lifestyle habits, sleep, stress management, or medication when appropriate.

The goal is to look at as many relevant pieces of a patient’s health as possible instead of treating one symptom in isolation.

The Connection Between Nutrition and Mental Health

Nutrition can play an important role in both physical and mental well-being. The body relies on different vitamins, minerals, and nutrients to support many important functions, including those involving the brain.

Dr. Vyas may consider whether nutritional deficiencies could be affecting a patient’s mood, focus, motivation, energy, or overall sense of well-being.

She may also look at the relationship between gut health and mental health. The gut and brain communicate with one another, which is why digestive health and gut bacteria may be considered as part of a broader mental health evaluation.

This does not mean that changes in diet or supplements will replace psychiatric treatment. Instead, these factors may be considered alongside therapy, medication, mindfulness techniques, and other forms of support when appropriate.

How Can This Help Children and Teens?

Integrative functional psychiatry may be very useful when dealing with younger patients.

Dr. Vyas specializes in working with children and adolescents and treats concerns including anxiety, depression, ADHD, and ADD. For a child or teen with ADHD, for example, she may look at whether nutritional deficiencies, sleep, lifestyle habits, or other underlying factors could be contributing to symptoms. Addressing these areas may provide additional support alongside standard psychiatric treatment.

Every child is different, which is why medication and other treatment decisions are made individually. The goal is not simply to avoid medication but to determine which combination of approaches may be most helpful for that particular patient.

What About College Students and Young Adults?

College students may also be interested in integrative functional psychiatry, especially if they are looking for a more holistic approach to managing anxiety, depression, attention difficulties, stress, sleep problems, or other concerns.

Some students may be hesitant about taking stimulant medication or may feel that their current treatment plan is not fully addressing their needs. In these situations, an integrative evaluation may provide another way to look at what could be contributing to their symptoms.

Dr. Vyas can work with patients to determine whether lifestyle changes, nutritional support, mindfulness, medication, or other treatment options should be considered.

Is Integrative Functional Psychiatry Right for You?

If you or your child are currently receiving mental health treatment but feel like something may still be missing, integrative functional psychiatry may offer another perspective.
