What Is a Sports Medicine Specialist? By Dr. Daniel Savarino

As a Sports Medicine Specialist, I never take for granted what we do, how we do it, and why.

For many injury symptoms, the “go to” used to be to seek an Orthopedist, when truly the best course of action is to consult a Sports Medicine Specialist when seeking relief from pain or repetitive motion issues. Both Orthopedic Surgeons and Sports Medicine Physicians specialize in the treatment of the musculoskeletal system. A Sports Medicine Physician’s expertise lies in the non-operative treatments of sports injuries and will work to maximize function, reduce time away from your life and sport, and create a Non-operative Treatment Plan.

Traditionally about 90% of orthopedic injuries don’t require surgery. With new technologies and advances in regenerative therapies, our goal is to get that number as close to 100% as possible

Non-Operative Musculoskeletal Injuries

  • Acute Injuries – ankle and muscle sprains, knee and shoulder injuries, and bone fractures
  • Overuse Injuries – Stress fractures, tendonitis or tendinosis, and rotator cuff impingement
  • Osteoarthritis & Tendonitis – Plantar fasciitis, bursitis, gout, arthritis

Sports Medicine Specialists are physicians with training in areas related to treating

and preventing injuries and health issues associated with sports, exercise, or strenuous physical activity. Sports Medicine is recognized as a medical subspecialty by Medicare and the American Board of Medical Subspecialties. Sports Medicine Specialists may be board certified in specialties such as Orthopedics, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Physical Medicine, or Pediatrics. To qualify as Sports Medicine Specialists, physicians must pass a Sports Medicine certification examination.

They must be re certified every 10 years. This discipline is as old as the interest in sports, but really became an official specialty in medicine in the 1950’s where it was first established as a department in a hospital. In the 1970’s, Americans began to show more interest in exercise, generating many new businesses to fill the need.

The medical community followed suit with the establishment of medical organizations to tap into the fitness movement. The more athletic the population became, the more injuries occurred. Symptoms such as back, neck, and shoulder pain as well as problems affecting the knees, elbows, and other body parts may all be connected to sports.

When it comes to sports and other injuries, the recovery process can be accelerated or delayed by many factors. Sports medicine doctors stay in close contact with patients, track their progress, and make further recommendations based on feedback.

The first step is to diagnose the condition with an examination and a conversation about lifestyle and how the injury occurred. This may include checking for swelling, bruising, tenderness, and range of motion for joints and limbs. Tests such as X-rays, MRIs, CT scans, and ultrasound may be used to determine if there are breakages or tissue damage.

Once a diagnosis is made, for an injury or chronic condition, a rehabilitation program to facilitate healing and prevent any further damage may be designed. A Physical Therapist or Trainer may get involved to help guide proper movements while avoiding exercises that are likely to cause further harm. Proper nutrition is part of the rehabilitation process, so we may recommend a certain diet along with appropriate supplements. In some cases, medication may be prescribed for pain relief or other reasons.
