THE HANGOVER IV THERAPY by Dr. Abe Schreiber, The Remedy Realm

We all know the common after-effects of a night of excess alcohol. You will not necessarily feel alcohol’s impact on your body right away, but it starts from the moment you take that first sip. Drinking any amount, of any kind of alcohol, can potentially lead to unwanted health consequences.

An estimated 95,000 people (approximately 68,000 men and 27,000 women) die from alcohol-related causes annually, with more than half of those deaths due to health effects like heart or liver disease from drinking too much over time.

Many people feel out of focus or fuzzy after drinking, some complain of a “wine headache.”  Wine is often credited as the most common drink to provoke a headache. This can be caused by alcohol dilating the blood vessels in your brain. Red wine has long been known as a migraine trigger, possibly because grape skins contain histamine and plant chemicals called tannins. White wine is made without grape skins, although, like red wine it does contain sulfites which can cause other reactions in the body.

Realistically speaking, alcohol is used in its purest form for disinfecting. It works because of its ability to kill microbes by disrupting their cell membranes. It has the same impact on our own cells. As a result of the cellular damage, it takes time for our bodies to heal and repair the damage. Certain vitamins and minerals are essential for that reparative process. Here is what alcohol does to your body:

  • Brain: Alcohol slows down the chemicals and pathways your brain uses to control your body, altering mood, slowing down reflexes and affecting balance. It also can contribute to learning, memory, and sleep problems.
  • Heart: Alcohol increases your heart rate and expands your blood vessels, making more blood flow to the skin (which causes you to feel warm), however, this heat passes out through the skin, causing body temperature to fall after it has risen.
  • Digestive: Alcohol is first broken down in the stomach, promoting an increase in digestive juices. Alcohol also irritates the small intestine and colon where it is further broken down and absorbed, and it also can affect the normal speed that food moves through them, which may result in abdominal pain, bloating, and diarrhea.
  • Kidney: Alcohol dries out (i.e., dehydrates) the body, which can affect the kidneys and the body’s ability to regulate fluid and electrolytes. It also disrupts hormones that affect kidney function.
  • Liver: Alcohol—most of it, in fact—is metabolized in the liver, which filters circulating blood and removes and destroys toxic substances, including alcohol. The liver can handle a certain amount of alcohol, but as a person continues to drink, it can become stressed to the point of causing permanent damage.

Alcohol is the obvious culprit behind a dreaded hangover. It is a diuretic with dehydrating effects. Chemicals called congeners can also cause more intense hangovers. These are chemical by-products of the fermentation process that gives alcoholic drinks their distinctive flavor. Congeners are found in higher concentrations in darker drinks, such as bourbon whiskey and red wine. The clear, colorless liquors such as vodka and gin cause less of a problem.

The debilitating symptoms of a hangover can last for hours without proper treatment, including dehydration, nausea, brain fog, headache, upset stomach, fatigue, and muscle aches. Hangovers are caused, in addition to dehydration, from nutrient depletion from alcohol consumption.

Certain people more prone to hangovers; personality, genetics, health, age, gender, and other associated behaviors may increase your risk. The progression and severity of symptoms over time can vary from one person to the next. The effects of alcohol can range from mild, to more severe symptoms such as passing out or vomiting. The following day and maybe longer…you cannot concentrate, or you may not be able to coordinate, function or think clearly.

Excessive alcohol use on a single occasion can also put you at risk of alcohol poisoning. Your body is overwhelmed by the amount of alcohol you drank and is no longer able to effectively process it from your system. Severe alcohol poisoning can lead to a coma and even death.

Although a person may not be abusing alcohol regularly, they can still experience its short-term effects. Your liver can metabolize about one standard drink of alcohol per hour. Of course, this can vary depending on several factors, including the individual’s age, weight, liver function, and gender. Bottom line, consuming more than one beverage per hour can lead to intoxication, raising an individual’s blood alcohol content (BAC) with each drink.
