Sciatica Survival Guide, by NJ Spine and Wellness

Sciatica is a common, but misunderstood, type of pain. Up to 40% of individuals will get it in their lifetime, and the chances of you developing it increase with age.

Sciatica pain occurs along your Sciatic Nerve, which branches down from your lower back to your buttocks, hips and both legs. Generally, it affects just one side of your body. It often happens with a herniated disc, bone spur on your spine or when narrowing of the spine (called spinal stenosis) puts pressure on part of your nerve, causing pain, inflammation and numbness in the affected leg.

Fortunately, sciatica is often relieved through effective conservative methods and without requiring surgery! Working to improve your core and back strength while enhancing flexibility throughout your lower body and hips will substantially decrease your likelihood of experiencing low back pain and other sciatica symptoms.

In the video below, Dr. Matt, Director of Chiropractic in our Matawan facility, breaks down what Sciatica pain is and where it stems from.

Glide through recovery with Sciatic Nerve Glides

In the video below, one of our expert Athletic Trainers in Matawan, Deryn, demonstrates a method of eliminating Sciatica pain called a “Nerve Glide.” Deryn starts with her knees pointing towards the ceiling. She then grabs the back of her thigh and flexes her toes towards her face. Deryn then begins to gently switch between points her toes to the ceiling and then flexing them back down towards her face.⠀

Sciatic nerve glides are a stretching technique that improves range of motion and mobility in injured nerves. The goal of performing sciatic nerve glides is to relieve the pain and pressure caused by a compressed sciatic nerve.

At NJ Spine and Wellness, our team of Physical Therapists, Chiropractors and Athletic Trainers will use conservative measures, such as therapeutic exercise, spinal mobilization techniques, chiropractic adjustments and dynamic stretching, to relieve and eliminate your pain.

Our Chiropractors can relieve your back pain through Spinal Decompression

If you are experiencing chronic neck or back pain caused by Sciatica, herniated or bulging discs, or degenerative disc disease, Spinal Decompression might be an effective method to help you feel better and Get Better Faster!

What exactly is Spinal Decompression? When back pain is caused by compression or pressure on the spinal cord or nerve roots, Spinal Decompression stretches the spine and helps to take the pressure off the affected nerves.

Dr. Chletsos, one of our Freehold Chiropractic Physicians, breaks down in the video below. Click here to learn more about Spinal Decompression.
