Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP) – A New Non-surgical Treatment for Hair loss

Hair loss is a common problem for men and women. Thinning hair can have a negative impact on one’s self confidence and self-esteem. A new non-surgical treatment for hair loss called platelet rich plasma therapy or PRP is a natural way to stimulate inactive hair follicles on your scalp. PRP has been known to show encouraging and noticeable results!

PRP is a therapeutic option for men and women with hair loss or thinning, due to genetics, stress or illness. Regardless of the reason for hair loss, PRP may be able to help re-grow and strengthen your existing hair. The best candidates for PRP are those that are beginning to lose their hair. It will not work for anyone that is completely bald.

PRP is performed in your doctor’s office using your own blood. Your blood is drawn into a special tube that assists in separating the plasma from the red and white blood cells. This tube is then placed in a centrifuge and spun at a high speed. The platelets, along with the serum and growth factors, are injected directly into the patient’s scalp where the hair is thinning. It is these growth factors that stimulate hair growth and slow down hair loss.

Results can vary from person to person. New growth may be seen at about 3 months, but may take from 4 to 6 months. Usually, the first signs of improvement are decreased amounts of hair loss while combing and less hair found at the bottom of the shower. Most people average monthly treatments for 3 to 4 months with follow-up treatments in 3 to 6 months. Patients may need to be treated once or twice a year thereafter.

There is minimal downtime for PRP therapy and the procedure takes less than an hour. Topical anesthesia is usually applied prior to the injection, but mild swelling and pain can still occur. This is easily controlled by Tylenol. It is very important to avoid medicines such as ibuprofen, Celebrex, and NSAIDS, because these will block the inflammatory cascade which is the mechanism of action of this procedure.
