Most of us by now have heard of microblading and permanent cosmetics. A friend, relative, co-worker had it done? It looks great or sometimes not so great? They had a positive experience or sometimes not so positive? This industry has exploded over the last 5 years and for good reason. When done correctly and in moderation you can wake up every day looking and feeling more confident with no muss or fuss. Waterproof, sweatproof and smudge proof brows, eyes and lips is obviously a wonderful thing but with so many new technicians out there choosing the right artist is key. There are many things to consider before booking that appointment. Education and training, certifications and reputation, and the continued compliance of proper state mandated regulations are significant factors when choosing a permanent cosmetic artist.
- Education & Training
Your artist’s education and training is vital. Choosing an artist that also has an aesthetic or nursing license through their practicing state is always recommended. Continuing education is very important as well. This industry is improving everyday with new techniques and information that will allow for your safest and best results. Be sure your artist is only doing the latest and greatest.
- Experience
Experience is everything. Years practicing is very important but how many procedures your artist has done is crucial as some technicians might have been in the industry a while but only do a few clients a week. With so many different skin types your artist should be well versed in knowing and being very comfortable with them all. Age, ethnicity, lifestyle, occupation, sun exposure, under and overtones of the skin all play a huge role in your best healed results. Reviews are a great resource as is an artist’s portfolio. Be weary of Groupon offers. A lot of new technicians list on Groupon to grow their clientele. It’s your face. Price shopping can be risky.
- Certification & Reputation
Your technician should have at least a basic certification from the American Association of Micropigmentation and/or the Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals. This is important because these boards require certain standards of not only ethics but keep your artist on top of the latest advancements and continuing education. Reputation is always important. Word of mouth is usually a great way to find a good artist. Google ratings, reviews, time in business can also be helpful.
- Compliance of State Mandated Regulations
Find out if the technician and establishment are approved by the Board of Health, follow all Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and CDC guidelines. Sanitary practices such as singular use of needles, machine parts, disposable chair covers and how the place is cleaned are comforting to know when making your choice. Because this procedure requires your technician to go into the skin, a yearly Bloodborne Pathogen Certification must be had by all permanent cosmetic professionals to help eliminate any risk of cross contamination. Unsafe practices could result in infection or viral exposure to bloodborne pathogens such as HIV and hepatitis. Technicians practicing micropigmentation out of their home is against the law in most states including New Jersey so avoid this completely.
