Children’s Dental Health Month! By Dr Bindu Sachdeva, One Stop Dental, Hazlet NJ

Who doesn’t love to see a toothy grin? There is something about the wide-eyed innocence of kids and the unabashed happiness in their smile that just gets you straight in the heart.

Toothy grins don’t always come naturally and need some routine maintenance to stay healthy. The February 2021 National Children’s Dental Health Month is brought to you by the American Dental Association a tradition started in 1949. It is their annual push for thousands of dedicated professionals, healthcare providers, and educators to promote the benefits of good oral health to children, their caregivers, teachers, and many others.

Youngsters need to be screened at an early age to determine their oral health and that their teeth are progressing normally. It is recommended that your child have their first visit after their first tooth erupts or by their first birthday. It is at this point the dentist will briefly examine your child’s teeth, gums, jaw, and bite to ensure that everything looks good.

Dental hygiene is one of the most important things we can teach our children as part of their daily routine. It is not always easy, but the sooner they develop good habits, the better their dental health will be. Show your child how to brush and floss properly, set an example and let them observe you and siblings doing the same thing.  Up until the age of 4 or 5, they are going to need help doing it properly. 51 million school hours are lost each year to dental-related conditions, you don’t want to be in that number unnecessarily. Tooth decay or dental caries is one of the most common diseases affecting children (aged 6 to 11 years) and adolescents (aged 12 to 19 years) in the United States.

Smart food choices can also assist in your child’s dental health.  Encourage drinking water, “Nature’s Drink”, rather than soda or sweetened drinks. It is not only crucial for body and brain development, it also keeps cavities away. Plain water helps with every sip as it dilutes harmful acids created by oral bacteria and washes away food particles.

42 percent of children aged 2-11 years have had tooth decay in their primary teeth…not so good.  SO how can we promote better care?  Make it fun!

Add Music to the Moment- we learned how long it takes to sing the happy birthday song is the same amount of time to properly wash hands. Kids should brush for 2 to 3 minutes so…. pick a song about that length and hum along while they brush.

Let the Gear Reflect Their Personality– let them pick out their own toothbrush and flavor toothpaste, as long as they are safe and healthy choices.

Please do not let the current health crisis stop you from giving your children the necessary preventative dental care, including their routine teeth cleaning and checkups.  According to a new study:

  • “Delays in preventative care could result in kids developing more tooth decay,”
  • “The problem with tooth decay is that when it starts in childhood, it’s really the strongest indicator of risk into adulthood.”

For every $1.00 spent on prevention in oral care, you can save $8-$50 on restorative and emergency procedures. Our patient’s parents can book pediatric dental appointments with confidence.  Our practice has protective gear, disinfecting stations, daily cleaning, and sanitization to keep our patients safe and healthy.

Give us a call and allow us to help the toothy grins in your family.
