AVOID SUMMER BEING A BUMMER By Stephen Dick

AVOID SUMMER BEING A BUMMER By Stephen Dick

Let’s get right to it.

Okay, we all know that Summer is on our doorstep. We usually welcome this season as it follows seasons that consist of dreary, cloudy, cold, wet, and short Winter and Spring days. With the coming of Spring, we begin to see the greening of lawns, the blooming of flowers, budding of leaves (ha-choo, lots of allergy commercials) and the sunny, warm, longer days ahead.

But, given the awaited climate change, this summer might not offer some of the more traditional activities at familiar prices, and therefore might require some unanticipated adjustments. We are aware of that unpleasant, and realistic word, “Inflation” and how it has changed much of what we normally do. Many of these summer activities will now cost more, because just about everything has been affected and costs more.

We know that whether dining out or dining in surely have increased costs. Now familiar gatherings for barbecues have additional costs. Traveling anywhere requiring fuel will surely tap the wallet and pocketbook as never before. Even participating in your some of your favorite activities such as tennis, pickle ball, golf, swimming, and beaching will see increased costs.

However, on the positive side, we have shown the unique ability to adapt and in so doing take advantage of what the beautiful summer days can offer. Admittedly a favorite is just getting out into the fresh air sitting in a comfortable chair with a book or iPad and some music can bring hours of relaxation. Taking walks through local parks with friends or riding a bicycle in your local community is enjoyable and refreshing. Viewing the local softball, little league or soccer action can be fun.

Guess where I am headed is that we can find many activities to participate in that may not be too intrusive on the budget. Summer is a time for fun and relaxation. It is a time to unwind and to remove pressure. And you may consider taking a one-day local trip to places that you have heard about but have not yet visited. Because New Jersey has so many sights such as trips to towns like Princeton, Cape May, Morristown, numerous Museums, the Towns along the Jersey Shore, Beautiful Beaches, Sensational Parks, Fun-filled Amusement Parks, and Breathtaking Mountains.

Additionally, there is our neighboring State of Pennsylvania (with Philadelphia, Bucks County, and New Hope) for some tremendous near-by destinations. These and many more Getaway days will surely add enjoyment to your summer days. Don’t forget the camera or remember to use your smartphone cameras to capture great sites and memories.

As a reminder, please remember to carry a protective mask with you, as Covid is still with us and might be required in some establishments.

Summer is usually a suitable time to visit your doctor, dentist, and training or wellness center, so let’s take advantage of this time to check your health.

Yes, this will be a different summer, but it does not have to be a bummer. Be creative, do the things you like to do without over-doing. Remember, to use a highly rated Sunscreen, drink lots of water and if being outdoors too long consider bug spray if necessary. Being Safe is being Smart!
